The Chief Economist Division was established in early 2009 to shape strategic policy through high-quality research, evaluation and analysis. Within this Division there are two work units:

1. The Economic Analysis Unit (EAU) supports the work of the Chief Economist by providing high quality evidence-based analysis of the relationship between migration, the economy and the labour market.

2. The Policy Innovation, Research and Evaluation Unit (PIREU) is responsible for developing and coordinating an annual research and evaluation program that improves program delivery and better positions the Department and the Minister to effectively address emerging issues and challenges.

Currently we have a Survey Specialist position available, requiring a suitably qualified person to manage the department’s major new longitudinal survey of humanitarian migrants.

There are also other employment opportunities expected to arise in the near future, centring around the management of the PIREU program of commissioned research and evaluation. This includes identifying strategic research and evaluation priorities to support DIAC's policy work, managing the process of establishing a program of research activities each financial year; and undertaking evaluations of departmental programs.
